I’ve written before about my downsizing adventures. In case you missed it, my husband and I downsized from one apartment to another even smaller one and we love it, but there are occasional challenges to overcome. Thinking of the number three, it’s the perfect time to tell you how we transformed our two-bedroom apartment into a three-bedroom one.
But first, why do we need three? Well, we actually only need two bedrooms – one for us and one for guests, which we welcome frequently. Not a week goes by when we don’t have someone sleeping over. Two bedrooms are enough. But we also need two work from home spaces.
Between us, my husband and I run four businesses (two each). He is also heavily involved in two committees. And there’s lots of life admin for us both as well. We definitely each need a comfortable, dedicated work from home space.
Our second bedroom is too small to accommodate both a double bed and an office desk. But it’s the only logical place in the home to house both. The answer was simple. We installed a wall bed, sometimes known as a murphy bed. It was custom made to fit exactly and make the most out of the available space. it’s really comfortable as a bed with a great mattress when opened and totally functional as a workspace when closed. We literally turned our two-bedroom home into a three-bedroom one.
With just five minutes and two hands, and no muscles required, we can quickly and easily transform the “office” into a “bedroom” or vice versa. There’s no need to move anything off the desk. In fact, a glass of water wouldn’t even spill during the operation. The desk simply cantilevers and is tucked underneath and out of the way. The bed is already made up with sheets and doona. We add pillows which are stashed in a nearby cupboard. Honestly it’s the best investment we’ve made in our home so far.
We used The WallBed Centre and couldn’t be happier with the quality of their work.
We have one of those, too, absolutely love it!
It’s a real game changer, isn’t it?
