One of the biggest frustrations our clients have with the process of getting organised is getting started. They don’t know where to start. They don’t feel confident to start. They feel overwhelmed and stuck before they’ve even started.
Thank goodness there are people like professional organisers who know what to do. They know where to start and how to keep going.
But can I let you into a little secret? When starting out on a new project, even professional organisers need to take a step back, take a moment to think about where to start, make a plan and then they can move forward with confidence.
This thought occurred to me recently when my batch writing group got together. We dedicate a day a month to do four writing sprints. The first sprint of the day is often the one that will set the tone for the rest. Most of us in the group choose to write something “easy” to get our writing mojo warmed up. I know for me it certainly does the trick. I start with a simple win and then momentum follows.
It’s the same when we’re helping a client to succeed in organising. When I work with a new client for the first time, I like to start with a small, achievable organising project. In other words, a simple win. A small project with a simple win helps the client to gain confidence, learn about the process, then feel comfortable with the process, and it helps to build their organising “muscles”.
If achieving a simple win creates momentum for a client, why can’t the same be said for a new organiser? I’ve lost count of the number of new organisers who find themselves overwhelmed and stuck before they’ve even started their organising business.
I’ve also lost count of the number of new organisers I’ve helped to overcome that overwhelm. Together, we identify small projects with simple wins that lead to momentum and ultimately, success.
