I am not a fan of the Garage Sale. Let me tell you why.
Firstly, the time they take to set up, run and pack down far outweighs any financial gain. Believe me, I can think of a million better ways to spend a day, mostly with the ones I love.
Secondly, I resent the intrusion. I don’t like strangers poring over my things, haggling over prices, arriving way too early (sometimes the day before), inspecting the contents of my garage which are not for sale. And I don’t need the stuff hanging around before the sale, waiting for enough to accumulate to make the sale worthwhile.
Thirdly, I can think of better ways to get rid of stuff. Donations to friends – from magazines and books to kitchenware, my friends have benefited from my personal decluttering. Donations to charity – in Melbourne, where I live, a quick phone call to Diabetes Victoria on 9923 8400 arranges a pickup of my unwanted goods. There will likely be a similar service where you live. Or there’s the local Charity Shop, where you can support a charity close to your heart.
And that’s why I’ll never have another Garage Sale. How about you?
