I’ve already written about how to level up in the Startup, Part-time and Full-time phases of an organising business. Now let’s look at my favourite stages – flying high and free as a bird, aka expert and veteran.
Flying high (Expert)
You will know you are flying high when you are well known. You will feel confident that the work will always be there. You can pick and choose your clients, and the work you do. You will get referrals from peers. And you might think, “I’ve made it. That’s all there is.” But there is always more you can do, if you choose.
How can you level up with you are already Flying High?
- Leverage your knowledge and expertise. The opportunities range from podcasting to television fame, and from an online course to a bestselling book.
- Get comfortable with public speaking. Think conferences, full day workshops, keynote addresses, radio interviews. Use your flying high status to champion a cause or make big bucks. You get to choose, remember.
- Set big goals that scare the heck out of you. What’s the worst that can happen?
Free as a bird (Veteran)
You don’t have to be elderly to be a veteran in this industry. The freedom of choice which comes when you are flying high is multiplied when you really do feel free as a bird. You’ve created a successful business from nothing. You’ve helped hundreds of clients transform their lives. You can say no to anything that doesn’t fill you with joy and a big fat yes to what really fires you up. Congratulations!
What are the next steps when you are already a veteran, free as a bird?
- Leave your mark. You’ve made a significant contribution to the organising landscape. What do you want to be remembered for? And how will that happen? I know of organisers who have created scholarships, served on committees, written memoirs.
- Work out your succession plan. They say to always begin with the end in mind. How do you want this to end? Will your business end when you do? Or will you sell your assets to someone coming up behind you?
- Know that you have earned the right to take control of your next step, whatever that is. Enjoy it!
